Books on Writing

People often ask me about my favorite books on the writing and publishing process. Here's a short list of some of my faves:

General:

Book Publishing:

This is my favorite book on what it takes to be a published author...

It kills me that some writers think they don't need any help writing book proposals. It's like a first time entrepreneur thinking that she/he can write a business plan without any consultation. A book proposal IS a business document that needs to be rendered creatively. I think these books are very helpful in showing what it takes to write a good one, i.e. one that sells.

Writing a Novel (I'm working on one now and found this book to be very helpful):

Screenwriting (I've yet to finish a screenplay, but I love dabbling in the form. Plus, I've found that these books have helped me with rendering scenes visually and understanding story structure in general.):

This isn't a book, but it's a fantastic software package for formatting your screenplay. Correct formatting can make the difference between getting your script read and getting it thrown in the recycling bin (I was gonna say "trash" but H-wood is so green.)
