I listen to so much new music that sometimes it gets overwhelming. I thought I'd use this Leap Day to catch up and write about some of my favorite songs of the year so far. (And this is based on what I actually play.)
My favorite song of the year, so far:
Zebra Katz ft. Njena Reddd Foxxx - "Ima Read"
It's nasty, mean, and smart. Sexist? Ironic? Camp? My primal self doesn't give a fuck.
Evian Christ - "Fuck It"
Whenever I need to get pumped up, this is the first thing I play.
I always need a dope, rock track to get me going. So far, this is it.
The Black Belles - "Not Tonight"
Jack White never lies!
Now, I'm just gonna put the rest of the tracks in alphabetical iTunes order:
Cassie - "King of Hearts"
When it comes to pop music, I don't really give a fuck about raw talent or studied skills. All that matters is the ability to create mood and command attention. In this department, Cassie delivers. My favorite Cassie moment is still 2009's silky "Must Be Love." (You should also check out the majorly glitchy "Must Be Love" remix by Jacques Greene.) "King of Hearts" is Cassie's entry into the Rihanna-dominated dance-pop world, and I can't stop dancing to it. 'Nuff said.
Chairlift w/ Das Racist - "Party (Beyoncé Cover)"
It's a testament to Beyoncé's taste that the cool kids still want to be like her. Pop charts be damned.
Dierks Bentley - "Thinking of You"
My fantasy country husband sings a song that feels like it's been ripped from my heart. #YouKnowWhoYouAre
Jay-Z - "Glory"
My favorite rapper talking about his first born:
"You're a child of destiny
You're the child of my destiny
You're my child with the child from Destiny's Child
That's a hell of a recipe"
John Talabot - "So Will Be Now"
So cool how he flips "Just My Imagination" into a weird, house masterpiece.
Perseus - "Running Back To You"
A brillz witchhouse-y remix of Ashanti's "Foolish."
Pollyester - Concierge D'Amour (Rory Phillips Mix)
In the '80s, I grew up on weird dance records like this (Alexander Robotnick, The Dominatrix). Glad to have them back.
Raekwon - Unexpected Victory
I'm honestly feeling the whole mix tape, start to finish. But if I had to pick a single track, it would probably be this:
Smooth, soulful, and true.
Rick Ross - Rich Forever
Again, I love the whole mixtape and play it nonstop. But this is my fave track.
Talk comes no tougher.
Tennis - "My Better Self"
Perfect formula: Indie rock & big-ass beats.
The Zolas - "Cultured Man"
I love songs that take me through changes, and this track, from late last year, takes many unexpected turns from indie rock to clap-happy dance. As the disco slut in me would say, "More, more, more."
